She started it all for me at least in terms of my current obsession with Funk as a genre (?) of music. Well, actually, Renee Stout, an artist who I’ve interviewed and written on. I talked with Renee in 2006 (it was my second interview with her), and I asked her what kind of music she liked. She talked about Betty Davis. Well, I admit to complete and utter ignorance. I did not know anything about her. Frankly, even though my dissertation has musical references in it (Earl Hines, Romare Bearden, Kool Moe Dee), I only devoted a paragraph to Betty Davis. She was the funk rocker of the 70s, but she was not a commercial success. Miles Davis, her husband for one year, said that she was like Madonna and Prince before they even existed. Her music is indeed funky. For more, check out Light in the Attic’s webpage. They re-released four albums by Betty Davis in 2007.
